Course Overview

Watercolour is a medium of great beauty and subtlety

This course will provide instruction in drawing and composition principles to achieve successful watercolour painting results. We will cover portraits , perspective , landscape and tonality. This course allows the student to undertake their own projects or explore provided themes that will expand their knowledge of the media. Students will explore colour mixing , use of brushes, preparing the paper and paint application.

Course Breakdown
Students can choose to undertake their own directions or be guided with class exercises. During the course of the term we will undertake landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, still life and  subjects such as birds and animals. The skills acquired week by week will allow the student to undertake more complex and challenging works. Watercolour will be utilised alone and in conjunction with other media such as pencil and pen. Each week the skills and confidence of the student will expand and they will be encouraged to attempt more challenging subjects. 
 
Please note: this course is suitable for beginners through to advance students.

Term 4 runs from Thursday 17 October to Thursday 5 December

2025 Term Dates

Term 1 runs from Thursday 6 February to Thursday 27 March

Term 2 runs from Thursday 1 May to Thursday 19 June

Term 3 runs from Thursday 24 July to Thursday 11 September

Term 4 runs from Thursday 16 October to Thursday 4 December 

 
Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will gain a knowledge of terminology, required equipment and use of materials. The students' level of skill and confidence with the media will increase and the resultant paintings will be more accomplished.

About the tutor

Richard Byrnes

Richard is a practising artist, having held 23 solo and over 100 group exhibitions in Australia and overseas. Having extensive teaching experience to draw upon, he is committed to teaching sound drawing and sculpture techniques in ways that are clear and accessible. His core belief is that art should be exciting and joyous. Richards works are included in the National Gallery, University of NSW, Artbank, Macquarie University and various regional gallery collections. His public sculpture commissions can be seen in North Sydney, Marrickville and Macquarie University. He is represented by the Robin Gibson Gallery in Sydney.
