Italian Advanced (B1)

Course Overview

Designed for students with a minimum 3 year study who wish to engage in active conversation and gain a deeper understanding of the language and culture. 

You are comfortable using past, present and future tenses with a vast vocabulary. You are generally confident in using your Italian language skills and seeking the opportunity to practise and keep improving. Grammar still has some more secrets to reveal to you and the audio-visual resources used in class will help consolidate its concepts and bring you closer to Italy. Not sure how much Italian you still remember after years of study? Wish to keep the memory of this beautiful language alive and give it a new spin? This class is also for you!

Course content

Week 1: review of material previously covered. 

Week 2: reading habits, telling a book story.

Week 3: the sequence of tenses. 

Week 4: discussing about books.

Week 5: passive voice with essere and venire.

Week 6: passato remoto: formation and use.

Week 7: writing the end of a story.

Week 8: masterpieces of the Italian literature. 

This outline provides an overview of what may be covered during the course; however, changes may occur based on various factors and the needs of the class.

Course outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Talk about books.
  • Express interest, disinterest, preference. 
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Recognize the remote past tense.
  • Ask for and give an explanation.
  • Give a review.

Term 1 runs on Tuesday 4 February to Tuesday 25 March 

Term 2 runs on Tuesday 29 April to Tuesday 17 June 

Term 3 runs on Tuesday 22 July to Tuesday 9 September 

Term 4 runs on Tuesday 14 October to Tuesday 2 December

About the tutor

Roy Gerente

A passion for Italy and its culture took Roy on a life journey of exploration which started in Greece and led to her Italian citizenship. She studied Italian language and literature and obtained a master’s degree in teaching Italian to foreigners from the University of Venice. She taught Italian to adults and children for several years in group and individual settings. She has attended specialisation courses in Italy and worked in a corporate environment in Rome and Athens. In her class, students are encouraged to participate in a fun and relaxing environment where mistakes are welcomed as friends.
