The exciting game of Mahjong has existed in one form or another for ages. It is interesting, fun, and stimulates the cognitive processes of the brain. Throughout the years, it has stood the test of time, and its longevity has made it popular again today, as the game has enjoyed a new resurgence with people of all ages. The game originated as a four player game where players compete to create matching tiles and achieve a winning hand.
Mahjong is a game of strategy, intelligence, skill, calculation and luck. Mahjong also helps improve the memory, judgement and reasoning of people with mild to moderate dementia.
There are many different interpretations of the rules of Mahjong. Rules in one place may differ greatly from rules in another location. Many groups of people who play the game have their own variation of the rules. So it is not set in stone for every game of Mahjong around the world what exactly the rules are.
Course Breakdown
Week 1: Introduction of Mahjong/Open hand
Week 2: Open hand/close hand
Week 3: Add blanks into the game
Week 4: Start some hands
Week 5: Eastern hands and Scoring
Week 6: Scoring/strategy
Week 7: Scoring/strategy
Week 8: Scoring/strategy
Term Dates
Term 4 runs from Wednesday 16 October to Thursday 12 December (depending on the class you attend)
2025 Term Dates
Term 1 runs from Wednesday 5 February to Thursday 3 April (depending on which day you attend)
Term 2 runs from Wednesday 30 April to Thursday 26 June (depending on which day you attend)
Term 3 runs from Wednesday 23 July to Thursday 18 September (depending on which day you attend)
Term 4 runs from Wednesday 15 October to Thursday 11 December (depending on which day you attend)

Hi u2013 I am Allen.I have been teaching Mahjong at NSCC since 2022. I started learning Mahjong when I was in my teens and so have experienced this amazing game since 2008. I am a Mahjong tournament director and run Mahjong tournaments all around Australia and thoroughly enjoy meeting and teaching lots of people with varying levels of experience from beginners to experts of Mahjong. I won the championship of Mahjong Australia tournament in 2011 and again in 2015 and reached runner up in 2017. I love to play lots of different styles of Mahjong rules such as Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan. I enjoy teaching eastern style and western style.
